Outdoor first aid
This course takes 2 days (16 hours) to complete and will leave participants with a Level 3 qualification in Outdoor First Aid and an Emergency First Aid at work qualification. Both certificates are valid for 3 years and are accredited and regulated by The First Aid Industry Body (FAIB).
In addition to the standard topics covered on the Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Course this course covers the sort of things that are more likely to go wrong on the hill.
From EFAW:
• Dealing with an emergency – assessing and monitoring a casualty & where to get help
• Accident recording and reporting
• Unresponsive casualty who is not breathing
• Use of AED
• Unresponsive casualty who is breathing
• Seizures
• Choking
• Bleeding
• Shock
• Burns

• Calling for help in remote locations
• Methods and limitations of evacuation
• Common conditions, e.g. asthma, epilepsy, angina and diabetes
• Cold injuries including hypothermia and frost nip/bite
• Heat injuries including burns, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, blisters, dehydration
• Drowning/near drowning
• Trauma injuries eg breaks, sprains, strains and dislocations (including head & spine)
• Electric shock (lightning for example)
• Bites and stings, including sheep/deer ticks.
• Substance abuse and poisoning.
First aid training is about building skills and confidence first, knowledge second. Hence this course is 'hands on' in emphasis, keeping lecture style to a minimum and group participation to a maximum. Participants must be able to join in with the practical aspect in order to pass.
This course meets Mountain Training requirements for the Hill and Moorland Leader and Mountain Leader courses.
